Our Featured Coordinator: Laurel Peterson

Administrator/Director of Student Services Pre-K through 9

Stanwich School (Greenwich, Conn.)

In her second year as a Math-A-Thon coordinator, Laurel Peterson and the students of Stanwich School in Greenwich, Conn., raised $42,314.69 in donations for St. Jude, through their participation last January in the Math-A-Thon program. Math-A-Thon is a perfect link with the school’s curriculum that teaches the fundamentals of core values such as helping others, compassion and commitment.

“In January, we teach the core value of ‘wisdom’ and how to use your wisdom to help others,” explained Ms. Peterson. “Sometimes it’s hard for a child to see where or how they can make a difference for others. With Math-A-Thon, our kids know they are helping, by using their brainpower to help other kids in need.”

Inspired by the spirit of giving to others, two Stanwich second-graders organized a weekend hot chocolate sale in order to raise money and awareness for the kids of St. Jude. Their efforts raised $120. And in a truly rare and special moment, a former St. Jude patient happened upon the hot chocolate booth. She thanked the students for their efforts, and they were able to put a face to those they are helping with their wisdom and kindness.
